The name ‘DIÁSPORA’ refers to the African Diaspora. The band’s philosophy is to celebrate the music that arose out of the African Slave Trade, and its influence on all subsequent popular music and jazz.
While the band’s music concentrates mainly on the Afro-Cuban idiom (the ‘Sandunga’ or the mix of African and Spanish ingredients in equal measure), their music also celebrates the unity and diversity of rhythms that emanated from Africa into the Americas (hence; ‘United in the rhythms of the New World’).
The 11-piece line-up lends itself to a big band sound, without losing the dynamism and spark of a small group; and combines sensuous vocals, sophisticated horn lines and explosive percussion solos. With their vision to bring together the rhythms of the Americas, DIÁSPORA is one of the most exciting new projects to emerge on the UK Latin scene today.
